WORKSHOP: GRADES 10 – 13, STUDENTS, DURATION: 150 MINUTES

Lived History – Refugees and Expellees as Witnesses

How do individuals cope with the loss of their homeland? How do they succeed in making a new start elsewhere? In this workshop we approach these questions through the personal testimonies of those who experienced displacement or expulsion first-hand: post-war German expellees, boat people from South Vietnam and refugees from former Yugoslavia. Video interviews, museum exhibits and historical documents will help us gain a sense of their experiences of violence. We will also address the social challenges posed by losing one’s homeland and having to integrate elsewhere.
