Workshop: Forms 10-13 / Final Year, Duration: 2,5 HRS

Long Shadows – a Century of Displacement

Forced migration is one of the byproducts of the sheer number of wars in the 20th century. Particularly the Second World War caused displacement and expulsion on an unprecedented scale, affecting 14 million Germans alongside other European nationals. We examine this chapter of European history through individual regional case studies, with a particular focus on the preceding history of Nazi ideology, Nazi occupation policy and the war of extermination. We will also discuss the manner in which refugees and expellees had to make a new start elsewhere, the social challenge of their integration and how their experiences have been commemorated.
