Us & Them – Belonging, Marginalisation and Forced Migration

How does belonging to a specific group shape our identity? How might others be able to define who we are? Why and how are minorities marginalised? What social mechanisms eventually lead to displacement and expulsion? Drawing on historical examples, the workshop examines the causes of forced migration and its ramifications for those who experience it. We will also consider current social challenges and contemporary debates pertinent to participants’ professional practice.
