From Bosnia to Berlin

What memories do refugees have of the wars in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia? How did they experience their displacement and arrival in Berlin?
The project “From Bosnia to Berlin” documents the personal memories of refugees from the former Yugoslavia who came to Berlin in the early 1990s. In over 20 biographical interviews, contemporary witnesses recount their lives before the war, their experiences of war, their displacement, and their arrival and life in Berlin. For those who were unable to stay in Germany, the interviews also address their return to their home countries or onward migration to the United States.
The project aims to contribute to public awareness of the subjective experiences of displacement, arrival, and to make visible personal perspectives on the consequences of the Yugoslav Wars.
The multi-hour interviews, supplemented by transcripts and translations, are available at the media stations in the Documentation Centre.
The project “From Bosnia to Berlin” was funded by the Berlin Lotto Foundation.
