What can letters, diaries and other handwritten documents tell us about displacement and expulsion? Personal accounts reveal the individual experiences of German refugees and expellees. Many of these texts are written in Sütterlin script. Following a brief introduction to the history of the script, participants will take a hands-on approach to learning the letters and will work together to decipher selected short texts from the Documentation Centre's collection. Participants are welcome to bring their own documents to practice reading historical handwriting.
Led by: Gesa Füßle, translator, editor and specialist in deciphering Sütterlin.
