Storytelling café: "The Trek – Photographs of displacement 1945"

Displacement, expulsion, and new beginnings are experiences that often have repercussions for generations, in family stories, mementos, and pictures. The photographs by Hanns Tschira and Martha Maria Schmackeit, who accompanied a trek from Lübchen in Lower Silesia in January 1945, show a story of displacement in the winter of 1945. At the same time, they raise questions: Who was looking at whom here? And how do such images shape our understanding of displacement to this day?

In the storytelling café, we would like to explore these questions and at the same time create space for your own thoughts, memories, and perspectives. Perhaps there were similar experiences in your family or even pictures that have been passed down?

After a brief introduction to the special exhibition, we invite you to exchange ideas over cookies and coffee: about personal connections to history, about what is being told—and about what often remains unsaid.
